# movicol
## Overview
- **Classification**: Osmotic laxative (Macrogol 3350 with electrolytes).
- **Mechanism**: Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) acts as an osmotic agent, retaining water in the bowel. This softens stool, increases faecal bulk, and stimulates bowel motility. Electrolytes prevent significant fluid and electrolyte shifts.
## Primary Indications
1. **Chronic Constipation**: Symptomatic treatment of chronic constipation.
2. **Faecal Impaction**: Resolution of faecal impaction, defined as refractory constipation with faecal loading of the rectum and/or colon.

## Monitoring & Follow-up
- **Before Treatment**: Assess underlying cause of constipation; rule out organic obstruction.
- **During Treatment**: Monitor for effective bowel movements, abdominal comfort, and hydration status.
- **Clinical Signs**: Watch for excessive diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, worsening bloating, or signs of dehydration (especially in children/elderly).
## Clinical Pearls
- 💡 **Tip 1**: Always dissolve each sachet in the recommended amount of water to ensure proper osmotic action and prevent dehydration.
- 💡 **Tip 2**: For faecal impaction, the dose regimen is intensive and should be closely monitored by a healthcare professional.
- 💡 **Tip 3**: If stools become very loose or watery, reduce the dose. This often indicates the dose is too high.
- 💡 **Tip 4**: Movicol generally does not cause dependence and is suitable for long-term use under medical guidance.
