# Mefenamic Acid ## Overview Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the fenamate class. It functions by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis. ## Primary Indications * Primary dysmenorrhea * Mild to moderate pain, including pain associated with dental procedures, minor surgery, and musculoskeletal disorders. * Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) ## Adult Dosing * **Primary Dysmenorrhea/Pain:** 500 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 1500 mg in any 24-hour period for the first 2 days of therapy, and do not exceed 1000 mg in any 24-hour period thereafter. Treatment should not exceed 7 days. * **Menorrhagia:** 500 mg every 4 to 6 hours, dosed to control bleeding and pain. Do not exceed 1500 mg in any 24-hour period for the first 2 days of therapy, and do not exceed 1000 mg in any 24-hour period thereafter. Treatment should not exceed 7 days. ## Pediatric Dosing Mefenamic acid is **not recommended for use in children under 14 years of age** for primary dysmenorrhea due to limited data and potential for adverse effects.
