# Isoxsuprine hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine is a beta-adrenergic agonist that acts as a vasodilator by directly relaxing vascular smooth muscle. Historically used for peripheral vascular disease and premature labor (tocolysis), it is now largely considered obsolete in many modern clinical settings due to limited efficacy data and the availability of superior therapeutic alternatives.
## Primary Indications
* Cerebrovascular insufficiency (historical).
* Peripheral vascular disease (e.g., arteriosclerosis obliterans, Buerger's disease, Raynaud's phenomenon).
* Premature labor (Note: Use for tocolysis is generally contra-indicated or discouraged by current clinical guidelines due to maternal cardiovascular risks).
## Adult Dosing
* **Peripheral Vascular Disease:** 10–20 mg orally 3 to 4 times daily.
* **Maximum Dose:** 80 mg/day.

* **Efficacy:** Evidence for its clinical benefit in peripheral vascular disease is weak. Consider vasodilator alternatives like cilostazol or pentoxifylline.
* **Tocolysis:** Use in obstetrics has been largely abandoned in favor of nifedipine, magnesium sulfate, or oxytocin receptor antagonists due to maternal safety profile.
* **Administration:** May be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal upset.
