# Hyoscine butylbromide
## Overview
Hyoscine butylbromide is an anticholinergic medication that works by blocking acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. This results in smooth muscle relaxation, particularly in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. It is poorly absorbed systemically, leading to a predominantly local effect.
## Primary Indications
* Management of abdominal cramps and spasms.
* Relief of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms, including pain and spasms.
## Adult Dosing
* **Oral:** 10-20 mg three to five times daily. Maximum dose: 100 mg daily.
* **Intramuscular/Intravenous:** 20 mg every 6-8 hours as needed. Maximum dose: 100 mg daily. Dosing for IV administration for acute severe colic may vary based on local protocols.
## Pediatric Dosing
Dosing in children is not well-established and requires caution.
* **Oral:** Limited data; some sources suggest 5-10 mg two to three times daily for children over 10 years. Use is generally not recommended for younger children due to lack of safety and efficacy data.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dose adjustments are typically required for hepatic or renal impairment due to very limited systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to hyoscine butylbromide or any component of the formulation.
* Glaucoma (angle-closure glaucoma).
* Myasthenia gravis.
* Tachyarrhythmias.
* Prostatic
