# Hepamerz (l-Ornithine l-Aspartate)
## Overview
Hepamerz is a combination of the amino acids l-ornithine and l-aspartate. It is thought to act by promoting the detoxification of ammonia in the liver and brain.
## Primary Indications
Treatment of hyperammonemia associated with liver disease, particularly hepatic encephalopathy.
## Adult Dosing
* **Oral:** Typically 3 to 6 grams three times daily. Doses can be adjusted based on patient response and ammonia levels. Maximum daily dosage is generally not to exceed 24 grams.
* **Intravenous:** Typically 5 grams in 500 mL of 0.9% sodium chloride or 5% dextrose administered over 30-60 minutes, up to twice daily. Dosing depends on the severity of hyperammonemia and patient's clinical status. Local protocols may dictate specific IV regimens.
## Pediatric Dosing
* Established pediatric dosing is not readily available. Use in pediatric patients should be guided by specialist consultation and careful monitoring.
## Dose Adjustments

## Contraindications
