# Fluids in Pediatrics
## Overview
Pediatric fluid management involves calculating maintenance requirements to meet metabolic needs, replacing deficits (dehydration), and managing ongoing losses. Choice of fluid typically involves isotonic crystalloids (e.g., 0.9% Normal Saline or Balanced Salt Solutions like Lactated Ringer’s/Plasma-Lyte). ## Primary Indications

## Pediatric Dosing

## Contraindications
* Fluid overload (e.g., congestive heart failure, severe pulmonary edema).

## Clinical Pearls
* **Avoid Hypotonicity:** Current pediatric guidelines (AAP) recommend isotonic solutions (e.g., 0.9% NaCl with Dextrose) for maintenance to mitigate the risk of ADH-mediated hyponatremia.
* **Glucose Requirements:** Always include dextrose (usually D5 or D10) in maintenance fluids for neonates and young children to prevent hypoglycemia, as they have limited glycogen stores.
