# Ecospirin (Aspirin, Enteric-Coated)
## Overview
Aspirin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, antipyretic, and antiplatelet properties. The enteric coating is designed to delay absorption and reduce gastrointestinal irritation.
## Primary Indications
* Secondary prevention of cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke)
* Acute management of suspected myocardial infarction
* Prevention of thromboembolic events in patients with specific cardiovascular conditions (e.g., atrial fibrillation, recent coronary artery bypass graft surgery or percutaneous coronary intervention)
* Rheumatic fever prophylaxis
## Adult Dosing
* **Secondary Cardiovascular Prevention:** Typically 75-100 mg once daily. Some guidelines may suggest doses up to 325 mg daily in specific situations.
* **Acute Myocardial Infarction:** Initial dose of 160-325 mg (chewable non-enteric coated is preferred for faster absorption, but enteric-coated may be used if chewable unavailable), followed by 75-100 mg once daily.
* **Other Indications:** Dosing varies significantly based on the specific condition and desired effect. Consult local guidelines or prescribing information.
## Pediatric Dosing
Aspirin is generally **contraindicated** in children and adolescents younger than 19 years with viral infections (e.g., influenza, chickenpox) due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. If aspirin is absolutely indicated, specific dosing should be determined by a pediatrician and based on weight.
## Dose Adjustments
