# Diloxanide furoate ## Overview Diloxanide furoate is an amebicide used to treat intestinal amebiasis. It is thought to act by disrupting protein synthesis in *Entamoeba histolytica*. ## Primary Indications * Asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis (luminal amebicide). * Used in conjunction with a tissue amebicide for invasive amebiasis. ## Adult Dosing * **Asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis:** 500 mg orally three times daily for 10 days. ## Pediatric Dosing * **Asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis:** 20 mg/kg/day orally divided into three doses, for 10 days. Maximum daily dose is 1.5 g/day. Specific dosing may depend on local pediatric guidelines and product availability. ## Dose Adjustments No specific dose adjustments are recommended for renal or hepatic impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal. ## Contraindications * Known hypersensitivity to diloxanide furoate. ## Adverse Effects The most common adverse effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
