# Diloxanide furoate
## Overview
Diloxanide furoate is an amoebicide effective against the luminal stage of *Entamoeba histolytica*. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of asymptomatic cyst passers of *Entamoeba histolytica*.
* Treatment of amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscesses (often used in combination with a tissue amoebicide).
## Adult Dosing
* **Asymptomatic cyst passers:** 500 mg orally three times daily for 10 days. Some sources may recommend 7 days.
* **Amoebic dysentery/liver abscess (in combination):** 500 mg orally three times daily for 10 days.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Asymptomatic cyst passers:** 5 mg/kg orally three times daily for 10 days, not to exceed the adult dose.
* **Amoebic dysentery/liver abscess (in combination):** 5 mg/kg orally three times daily for 10 days, not to exceed the adult dose.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dose adjustments are typically required for renal or hepatic impairment.
## Contraindications
* Known hypersensitivity to diloxanide furoate or any component of the formulation.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, pruritus, urticaria.
* **Rare:** Headache, dizziness, rash.
## Key Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions are well-established.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for resolution of symptoms and eradication of *E. histolytica*.
* Monitor for adverse effects.
## Clinical Pearls
* Diloxanide furoate is effective against the luminal form of amoebiasis only and must be combined with a tissue amoebicide (e.g., metronidazole) for invasive disease.
* It is generally well-tolerated.
* The formulation is available as tablets and a suspension.
