# Dicyclomine Hydrochloride
## Overview
Dicyclomine hydrochloride is an anticholinergic and antispasmodic medication primarily used to relieve smooth muscle spasms and associated pain, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract.
## Primary Indications
* Cramping and pain associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal disorders.
## Adult Dosing
* **Oral suspension/tablets:**
* Initial dose: 10 mg to 20 mg four times daily.
* Titration: Dose may be increased gradually based on clinical response and tolerance, up to a maximum of 40 mg four times daily (160 mg/day).
* **Intramuscular injection:**
* 10 mg to 20 mg intramuscularly every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
* Maximum daily dose by injection is typically 80 mg.
## Pediatric Dosing
Dicyclomine is generally **not recommended** for infants and children under 6 months of age due to the risk of serious adverse effects, including respiratory depression, coma, and circulatory collapse. For children aged 6 months and older:
* **Oral suspension:**
* 5 mg to 10 mg three or four times daily.
* Dosing should be individualized and carefully monitored.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dose adjustments are routinely necessary for hepatic or renal impairment, but caution is advised due to potential accumulation and increased risk of anticholinergic side effects.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to dicyclomine.

* Glaucoma (especially narrow-angle).
