# Clotrimazole 1% Topical Solution
## Overview
Clotrimazole is a synthetic imidazole antifungal agent. It works by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and cell death.
## Primary Indications
* **Tinea pedis (athlete's foot):** Fungal infection of the feet.
* **Tinea cruris (jock itch):** Fungal infection of the groin.
* **Tinea corporis (ringworm):** Fungal infection of the body.
* **Cutaneous candidiasis:** Fungal infection of the skin caused by Candida species.
## Adult Dosing
Apply a sufficient amount of the solution to cover the affected area once or twice daily. Duration of treatment typically ranges from 2 to 4 weeks, but may be longer depending on the clinical response and the specific infection. For tinea pedis, treatment often requires up to 4 weeks.
## Pediatric Dosing
Generally the same as adult dosing. Safety and efficacy have not been established for all specific indications in children. Local protocols should be consulted.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustments are typically necessary based on renal or hepatic impairment for topical formulations.
## Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or any component of the formulation.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Skin irritation, redness, burning, stinging, itching, peeling at the application site.
* **Less Common:** Allergic reactions (rare).
## Key Drug Interactions
Topical application of clotrimazole is not expected to have significant systemic absorption, thus clinically relevant drug interactions are unlikely.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of improvement in the fungal infection.
* Assess for and manage any local skin irritation or signs of hypersensitivity.
## Clinical Pearls
* Apply solution to clean, dry skin.
* Continue treatment for the recommended duration, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent recurrence.
* Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
* For tinea pedis, it's important to also treat footwear and change socks frequently.
