# Ciprofloxacin
## Overview
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
## Primary Indications
* Urinary tract infections (complicated and uncomplicated)
* Prostatitis
* Bone and joint infections
* Intra-abdominal infections
* Lower respiratory tract infections
* Skin and soft tissue infections
* Infectious diarrhea
* Anthrax (prophylaxis and treatment)
* Plague (treatment)
## Adult Dosing
Dosing varies significantly by indication and severity. Typical doses for oral or IV administration range from 250 mg to 750 mg every 12 hours.
**Examples:**
* **Uncomplicated UTI:** 250 mg orally twice daily for 3 days.
* **Complicated UTI:** 500 mg orally or IV twice daily for 7-14 days.
* **Prostatitis:** 500 mg orally or IV twice daily for 28 days.
* **Diverticulitis:** 500 mg orally or IV twice daily for 7-14 days.
* **Anthrax (treatment):** 500 mg orally or IV twice daily for 60 days.
Maximum daily dose generally 1500 mg orally or 1200 mg IV.
