# Calcium Gluconate ## Overview Calcium gluconate is an inorganic salt of calcium used to treat or prevent hypocalcemia. ## Primary Indications * Treatment of hypocalcemia. * Adjunctive treatment for magnesium sulfate overdose. * Management of acute hyperkalemic ECG changes. * Treatment of hydrofluoric acid burns (topical). ## Adult Dosing * **Hypocalcemia:** * Intravenous (IV): 1 gram to 2 grams (90 mg to 180 mg elemental calcium) administered slowly over 10-20 minutes. May be repeated every 6-12 hours as needed. Higher doses may be required based on clinical assessment and serum calcium levels. * Oral: 1 gram to 2 grams (elemental calcium) up to 4 times daily. * **Magnesium Sulfate Overdose:** IV infusion of 1 gram (90 mg elemental calcium) at a rate not to exceed 1.5 grams/minute. * **Hyperkalemia:** IV infusion of 1 gram to 3 grams (90 mg to 270 mg elemental calcium) over 5-10 minutes. This does not lower potassium but stabilizes the cardiac membrane. * **Hydrofluoric Acid Burns (Topical):** Topical gel or solution applied liberally. ## Pediatric Dosing * **Hypocalcemia:** * IV: 100-250 mg/kg (2.2-5.5 mL/kg of a 10% solution) infused over 10-20 minutes. Further doses if needed. Maximum single dose typically 1 gram. * Oral: 50-150 mg/kg/day divided into 3-4 doses. ## Dose Adjustments No specific dose adjustments are noted for renal or hepatic impairment, but caution is advised in these populations. ## Contraindications * Hypercalcemia. * Known
