# Calcium Gluconate ## Overview Calcium gluconate is an inorganic salt used to treat or prevent low blood calcium levels. It is available in oral and intravenous formulations. ## Primary Indications * Treatment and prevention of hypocalcemia. * Adjunctive treatment in poisoning with magnesium sulfate, hydrofluoric acid, and (in certain circumstances) black widow spider bites. ## Adult Dosing * **Hypocalcemia Treatment (IV):** 10 mL of a 10% solution (1 gram calcium gluconate) administered slowly over 10-20 minutes. May be repeated every 6-12 hours as needed. Dosing based on serum calcium levels and clinical response. Maximum rate of infusion typically 0.645 mEq/min (3.2 mL of 10% solution/min). * **Hypocalcemia Prevention/Treatment (Oral):** Varies significantly by product and indication.
