# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical preparation primarily composed of zinc oxide and ferric oxide (iron oxide). It acts as a skin protectant and has mild astringent and antipruritic properties.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching and irritation associated with minor skin irritations, such as poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, and sunburn.
* Management of discomfort from minor scrapes and abrasions.
## Adult Dosing
Apply to the affected area as needed, typically 3-4 times daily, or as directed by a healthcare provider. Shake well before use.
## Pediatric Dosing
Generally regarded as safe for use in pediatric patients. Apply to the affected area as needed, typically 3-4 times daily, or as directed by a healthcare provider. Shake well before use. No specific dose adjustments are typically necessary for children.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustments are typically required for specific patient populations (e.g., renal or hepatic impairment) as the medication is for topical use and has minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Known hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
* Avoid application to severely broken skin or open wounds unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider.
## Adverse Effects
Adverse effects are generally uncommon and mild due to limited systemic absorption.
* Dryness of the skin.
* Mild skin irritation or redness at the application site.
* Accidental ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting).
## Key Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions are expected with topical application.
## Monitoring
* Monitor the affected skin area for improvement in symptoms (e.g., reduced itching, redness, irritation).
* If symptoms worsen or persist after 7 days of use, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
## Clinical Pearls
* Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure proper mixing of ingredients.
* Allow the lotion to dry completely on the skin to form a protective barrier.
* For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
* If signs of infection occur, consult a healthcare provider.
