# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical preparation containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It is primarily used for its drying, soothing, and mildly antiseptic properties.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations, such as insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, sunburn, and eczema.
## Adult Dosing
* Apply thinly to the affected area as needed, typically 3 to 4 times daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
## Pediatric Dosing
* Generally regarded as safe for pediatric use. Apply thinly to the affected area as needed, following the same frequency as adult dosing, or as directed by a healthcare professional. No specific dose adjustments are typically required for children, but application should be supervised to prevent ingestion.
## Dose Adjustments
* No dose adjustments are typically necessary for patients with renal or hepatic impairment due to negligible systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
* Not for internal use.
## Adverse Effects
* Generally well-tolerated.
* Local irritation, dryness, or increased sensitivity may occur in rare instances.
* Accidental ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset (e.g., nausea, vomiting, constipation).
## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant drug interactions are expected with topical application.
* Avoid concurrent use of other topical agents on the same area without consulting a healthcare professional.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for resolution of symptoms (itching, redness).
* Discontinue use if skin irritation worsens or does not improve within 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls
* Shake well before use as the ingredients may separate.
* For external use only. Keep out of eyes and mucous membranes.
* If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider.
* Safe for use on children, but prevent them from ingesting the lotion.
