# Calamine lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical preparation that contains zinc oxide and ferric oxide (or ferrous oxide which oxidizes to ferric oxide). It is used as a skin protectant and has mild astringent and antipruritic properties.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching and irritation associated with minor skin irritations, insect bites, poison ivy/oak/sumac, sunburn, and minor scrapes.
## Adult Dosing
Apply to the affected area as needed, usually 1 to 4 times daily.
## Pediatric Dosing
Apply to the affected area as needed, usually 1 to 4 times daily. No specific pediatric dose adjustments are generally required.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustments are typically necessary for renal or hepatic impairment as it is a topical preparation with minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
