# Calamine lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical preparation containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It is primarily used for its astringent and protective properties.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations, such as insect bites, sunburn, poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
* Drying of oozing and weeping of poison ivy and poison oak.
## Adult Dosing
Apply thinly to the affected area as needed, typically 1 to 4 times daily.
## Pediatric Dosing
Apply thinly to the affected area as needed. Dosing is typically the same as adults for symptomatic relief.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustments are typically necessary based on organ function.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
* Do not apply to deep or puncture wounds.
## Adverse Effects
Generally well-tolerated. May cause temporary drying or skin irritation in rare cases.
