# Calamine lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical preparation containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide (iron oxide). It is used as a skin protectant and astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching and irritation associated with minor skin irritations such as insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
* Drying of oozing and weeping of poison ivy and poison oak.
## Adult Dosing
Apply topically to the affected area as needed, typically 3-4 times daily. Shake well before use.
## Pediatric Dosing
Apply topically to the affected area as needed, typically 3-4 times daily. No specific pediatric dose adjustments are established. Use caution in infants and young children, especially on large areas of broken skin, due to potential for zinc absorption.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustments are typically required.

* Avoid application to severely infected or deep wounds.
## Adverse Effects
Generally well-tolerated when used as directed. Potential adverse effects include:
* Dryness of the skin.
* Mild skin irritation or allergic reactions (rare).
* Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset; large amounts could lead to zinc toxicity.
## Key Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions are expected with topical application.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation or allergic reaction.
* If symptoms do not improve within 7 days or worsen, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
## Clinical Pearls
