# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as an astringent and cooling agent to soothe minor skin irritations.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching, pain, and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, prickly heat).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Shake well before use. Apply a thin layer to the affected area as needed, up to 3–4 times daily.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children ≥6 months:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area as needed, up to 3–4 times daily.
* **Infants <6 months:** Consult a pediatrician; use only under medical supervision.
## Dose Adjustments
* No formal dose adjustments required for renal or hepatic impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild dryness or irritation at the application site.
* **Serious:** Contact dermatitis (potential allergy to zinc oxide or auxiliary ingredients). Discontinue use if condition worsens or symptoms persist >7 days.
## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant systemic drug-drug interactions due to negligible systemic absorption. Avoid concurrent application of other topical products to the same area to prevent potential absorption interference or irritation.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, or fever).
* Assess for resolution of pruritus or irritation.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake well:** Calamine is a suspension; vigorous shaking is required to ensure consistent concentration of active ingredients.
* **Flammability:** Calamine lotion dried on clothing or bandages can be flammable; keep away from open flames or high heat sources.
* **Drying effect:** The astringent nature of the lotion can be drying; avoid use on severely dehydrated or fissured skin.
* **Ingestion:** For external use only. If ingested, seek medical advice or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
