# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as an astringent and soothing agent for pruritic (itchy) skin conditions. It is non-prescription and intended for external use only.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus associated with poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, or minor skin irritations.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Shake well before use. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily, or as needed for itching. Allow the lotion to dry completely.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children and Infants:** Safe for use in children and infants. Dosing frequency follows the adult regimen: apply thinly 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose titration is required as the medication is intended for topical application only.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to blistered, raw, or oozing skin areas unless directed by a healthcare provider.
* Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Dryness or skin irritation at the site of application.
* **Rare:** Allergic contact dermatitis (redness, swelling, or rash at the application site).
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant for topical application.
* Avoid concurrent application of other topical products on the same site unless directed by a clinician, as absorption or vehicle efficacy may be altered.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, infection (pus, increased warmth, spreading redness), or allergic reaction.
* Discontinue use if symptoms persist beyond 7 days or if a new rash develops.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Effect:** Calamine has a significant drying effect; prolonged use may lead to excessive skin dryness or cracking.
* **Application:** Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application.
* **Storage:** Store at room temperature; do not freeze. Shake vigorously to ensure the ferric oxide and zinc oxide are uniformly suspended.
* **Ingestion:** If ingested, seek medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
