# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic combination product consisting primarily of zinc oxide (15%) and ferric oxide (0.5%), suspended in an aqueous base (often with glycerin, bentonite magma, and calcium hydroxide). It provides a cooling, soothing effect upon evaporation and serves as an astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Temporary relief of itching and pain associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy/oak/sumac, insect bites, prickly heat, chickenpox).
* Astringent for drying weeping or oozing skin lesions.
## Adult Dosing
* **Application:** Apply a thin layer to clean, dry, affected skin areas as needed, typically 3 to 4 times daily.
* **Max Dose:** No specific systemic maximum due to minimal percutaneous absorption, but excessive application may lead to skin dryness or irritation.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adults (apply thin layer 3–4 times daily).
* **Precautions:** Use caution in infants to avoid ingestion (keep away from mouth/nose) or inhalation of aerosolized residue if using a spray format.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic Impairment:** No dose adjustment necessary due to lack of systemic absorption.
* **Geriatric:** No specific adjustment; monitor for excessive skin drying.
## Contraindications
* Known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Local:** Contact dermatitis, skin irritation, excessive dryness, or crusting if applied too thickly.

## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant systemic drug-drug interactions.
