# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic combination product, typically consisting of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It serves as a drying agent for weeping or oozing skin conditions.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching, pain, and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, rashes).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area as needed, typically 3 to 4 times daily.
* **Maximum:** No specific daily maximum frequency established, but excessive use may lead to over-drying of the skin. Use only as needed for symptom relief.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing. Safe for use in children; however, ensure the child does not ingest the product.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic Impairment:** No adjustments required as systemic absorption is negligible.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Do not apply to raw, blistering, or oozing skin without consulting a healthcare provider if the condition appears infected.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Dryness, irritation, or contact dermatitis.
* **Severe:** Rare instances of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling).
## Key Drug Interactions
* Minimal systemic absorption means clinically significant systemic drug-drug interactions are unlikely. However, avoid applying other topical medications simultaneously to the same site unless directed, as the barrier effect of calamine may interfere with the absorption of other topicals.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection (increased redness, warmth, purulent drainage, or spreading).
* Assess for improvement or worsening of skin condition. Discontinue if the condition persists for >7 days or worsens.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake well:** The active ingredients are a suspension and will settle at the bottom of the bottle; shake vigorously before each application.
* **Drying effect:** The product works by evaporating from the skin; do not cover with an occlusive dressing/bandage unless directed by a clinician.
* **Avoid ingestion:** Calamine is for external use only. If ingested, seek medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
* **Visual cues:** The pink residue left on the skin is normal but may stain fabrics.
