# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as an antipruritic and mild astringent. It works primarily via a cooling effect as the water evaporates from the skin.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching, pain, and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations (poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, and contact dermatitis).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Shake well before use. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing. Safe for use in children; avoid application near the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. Ensure the child does not ingest the product.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required due to topical application. Discontinue if condition worsens or symptoms persist beyond 7 days.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to blistered, raw, or oozing areas of skin unless directed by a primary care provider (as it may form an occlusive crust).
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild skin dryness or irritation.
* **Serious:** Contact dermatitis (rare).
## Key Drug Interactions
* No clinically significant systemic drug interactions.
* **Guidance:** Do not apply other topical medications (e.g., corticosteroids) simultaneously without consulting a healthcare provider, as calamine may affect their absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection (increased redness, warmth, pus, or fever).
* Monitor for resolution of pruritus.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Application:** Always shake the bottle vigorously before each use to ensure a uniform suspension.
* **Washing:** The lotion can be easily removed with warm water and soap.
* **Inhalation Risk:** Avoid applying near the face to prevent accidental inhalation of the powder particles, which can cause respiratory irritation.
* **Storage:** Keep out of reach of children. The product is intended for external use only; accidental ingestion requires immediate contact with Poison Control.
