# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent consisting primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It functions by providing a cooling sensation upon evaporation and a mild astringent effect to protect irritated skin.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites).
* Temporary relief of pruritus associated with rashes.
## Adult Dosing
* Apply a thin layer to the affected area as needed, typically 3 to 4 times daily.
* Shake well before each application to ensure uniform suspension of active ingredients.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing.
* **Safety Note:** Use caution in infants to prevent ingestion and avoid application near the eyes. Consult a pediatrician for use in infants < 6 months.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required as the drug is for topical use only.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Do not apply to raw, blistering, or oozing skin surfaces unless directed by a healthcare provider.
## Adverse Effects
* **Local:** Minimal; occasional contact dermatitis or skin irritation.
* **Systemic:** Extremely low risk of absorption; no significant systemic toxicity reported from topical use.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant for topical administration.
* Avoid applying other topical medicated products to the same site simultaneously, as it may affect absorption or efficacy.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary infection (e.g., increased redness, swelling, pus, or fever).
* Monitor for allergic reaction or worsening of skin condition.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Effect:** Calamine dries to a powder; it is highly effective for weeping or oozing rashes (e.g., poison ivy) but may be overly drying for already dry or eczematous skin.
* **Application:** Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application.
* **Discontinuation:** If the condition persists, worsens, or lasts longer than 7 days, discontinue use and seek medical evaluation.
* **Storage:** Keep container tightly closed and shielded from light.
