# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant consisting primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It functions as an astringent and antipruritic agent, providing a cooling and drying effect upon evaporation when applied to the skin.
## Primary Indications
* Temporary relief of minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac).
* Relief of pruritus associated with insect bites, stings, or minor rashes.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform suspension.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children 6 months and older:** Same as adult dosing (apply thin layer 3 to 4 times daily).
* **Infants <6 months:** Use only under the guidance and supervision of a pediatrician.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required due to negligible percutaneous absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatologic:** Drying of the skin, irritation, or contact dermatitis (rare).
* **Systemic:** Likely none due to low systemic absorption.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant for topical application.
* Avoid applying other topical medicaments concurrently to the same area unless directed by a provider to ensure physical integrity of the application.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, infection (erythema, warmth, purulence), or failure of the rash to resolve within 7 days.
* If symptoms persist or worsen, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Agent:** Calamine is highly effective for "weeping" lesions (e.g., vesicles from poison ivy) due to its zinc oxide content.
* **Application:** Allow the lotion to dry completely to form a protective barrier; the evaporation process contributes to the cooling sensation.
* **Staining:** Can stain clothing; allow to dry before allowing skin contact with fabric.
* **Storage:** Store at room temperature; shaking is critical as the active ingredients settle significantly over time.
