# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It serves as an astringent and mild antipruritic, typically formulated as a suspension that leaves a cooling, protective film upon solvent evaporation.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac).
* Relief of pruritus associated with insect bites, stings, or minor rashes.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area as needed, up to 3–4 times daily.
* **Maximum:** No specific daily maximum established, but discontinue if the condition worsens or persists beyond 7 days.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children ≥ 6 months:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area as needed, up to 3–4 times daily.
* **Infants < 6 months:** Consult a pediatrician before use. Safety and efficacy not well-established in this population.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required due to minimal percutaneous absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to open wounds, blistered, or raw, oozing skin (may cause crusting/trapping of bacteria).
* Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild stinging or burning upon application, localized cutaneous dryness.
* **Rare:** Allergic contact dermatitis, skin irritation.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant due to limited systemic absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection (e.g., increased erythema, warmth, purulence).
* Assess for allergic reactions or worsening of the pruritic condition.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake Well:** Always shake the bottle vigorously before use to ensure proper suspension of the active ingredients.
* **Application:** Allow the lotion to dry completely on the skin. It acts by creating a barrier and providing a cooling sensation via evaporation.
* **Staining:** Note that the lotion may stain clothing or linens.
* **Combination Products:** If the product contains additional ingredients (e.g., pramoxine or diphenhydramine), assess for potential systemic toxicity if applied over extensive body surface areas, particularly in younger children.
