# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent consisting primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It functions by providing a cooling sensation upon evaporation and soothing inflamed, irritated skin.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations: poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, and contact dermatitis.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake well before each use.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing. Safe for use in children; however, ensure the child does not ingest the product.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments are required as the drug is for topical use only.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to open, bleeding, or severely blistered skin or deep puncture wounds.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild skin irritation, contact dermatitis (rare), or dryness due to prolonged use.
* **Systemic:** None typically reported with topical application.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant for topical administration. Avoid applying other topical medicaments to the same site simultaneously unless directed by a provider.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary infection (e.g., increased redness, swelling, warmth, or pus).
* Assess for allergic reactions (e.g., hives or increased itching).
* Discontinue use if the condition worsens or persists beyond 7 days of treatment.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Effect:** Calamine is drying; it is most effective for "weeping" lesions (e.g., poison ivy/oak blisters) and may be less effective for dry/cracked skin.
* **Ingestion Risk:** Keep out of reach of infants and young children to prevent accidental ingestion.
* **Application:** Allow to dry completely on the skin to form a protective layer.
* **Avoid Eyes/Mucus Membranes:** Do not apply near eyes, mouth, or genitalia.
