# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide (ferrous oxide gives it the characteristic pink color). It functions as a mild antipruritic and astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of minor skin irritation and itching (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, chickenpox).
* Drying of oozing or weeping skin lesions.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* Shake well before use to ensure proper suspension.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Topical:** Indicated for children of all ages. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* **Note:** Use caution in infants to ensure ingestion does not occur.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic:** No adjustments required as systemic absorption is negligible.
* **Geriatric:** No specific adjustments required; observe for excessive drying of fragile skin.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
* Do not apply to open, severely blistered, or infected skin unless directed by a provider.
* Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild skin irritation, contact dermatitis, drying of the skin.
* **Rare:** Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling).
## Key Drug Interactions
* Minimal systemic absorption limits significant drug-drug interactions.
* Avoid concomitant application of other topical medications to the same site to prevent interference with drug absorption or physical occlusion.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, secondary bacterial infection (redness, warmth, pus), or failure to improve after 7 days of treatment.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Agent:** Calamine is highly astringent; frequent use may lead to excessive drying or cracking of the skin.
* **Application:** Shake the bottle vigorously before each use, as the active ingredients settle rapidly.
* **Removal:** The product can be easily removed from the skin using warm water and mild soap.
* **Patient Education:** Advise patients that the product is for external use only. If the condition persists, worsens, or is accompanied by fever, seek medical evaluation.
