# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It functions as an antipruritic, mild astringent, and antiseptic agent. It is available over-the-counter (OTC) in various aqueous suspensions.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy/oak/sumac, insect bites, chickenpox).
* Temporary protection of minor skin abrasions.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform suspension.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Pediatric (all ages):** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Safety is generally well-established for children, though avoid application near or on the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. Ensure the child does not ingest the product.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic Impairment:** No specific dosage adjustments required due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to zinc oxide, ferric oxide, or any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to open wounds, blistered areas, or raw, oozing skin unless directed by a healthcare provider.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatologic:** Contact dermatitis, skin irritation, or potential drying of the skin with prolonged use.
* **Systemic:** Generally none, as systemic absorption is negligible when applied topically to intact or minorly abraded skin.
## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant clinical drug interactions have been identified due to the topical nature and low systemic absorption of ingredients.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection (increased redness, warmth, pus).
* Discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider if the condition worsens or persists for more than 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Application Technique:** Always shake the container vigorously before application to ensure the active ingredients are properly suspended.
* **Drying Properties:** The lotion has a drying effect; it is most effective for "weeping" lesions (e.g., poison ivy blisters) but may excessively dry healthy skin.
* **Hygiene:** Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application. It is easily washed off with warm water.
* **Ingestion Risk:** Keep out of reach of children. While low-level toxicity is unlikely, ingestion can lead to gastrointestinal irritation.
