# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as an antipruritic and mild astringent. It is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) suspension.
## Primary Indications
Symptomatic relief of pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations, such as poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, and contact dermatitis.
## Adult Dosing
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform suspension of active ingredients.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children and Infants:** Safe for topical application. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* **Note:** Exercise caution to prevent ingestion or application near the eyes.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dosage adjustments are required for renal or hepatic impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation. Do not apply to raw, blistered, or oozing skin without medical consultation, as it may dry the area prematurely or crust over an infection.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatologic:** Drying of the skin, irritation, or contact dermatitis upon prolonged use.
* **Systemic:** Generally negligible due to lack of significant transdermal absorption.
## Key Drug Interactions
No clinically significant drug-drug interactions are documented. Theoretical interference with the absorption of other concurrently applied topical medications may occur; apply other topicals first, allow absorption, and wait before applying calamine.
## Monitoring
Monitor for resolution of pruritus. Discontinue use if condition worsens, symptoms persist for >7 days, or if signs of secondary bacterial infection (e.g., increased redness, warmth, pus) develop.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Removal:** If the lotion becomes difficult to wash off, use a warm, damp cloth or mild soap and water.
* **Warning:** Calamine lotion is for external use only. Ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal upset.
* **Drying Effect:** Due to its astringent nature, chronic use on healthy skin can lead to xerosis (dryness).
* **Application:** Once dry, it leaves a powdery residue that may be unsightly; consider this for exposed areas of the body.
