# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical dermatological agent composed primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide (which provides the characteristic pink color). It functions as a skin protectant and mild astringent, providing a cooling and soothing effect upon evaporation.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, chickenpox).
## Adult Dosing
* Apply topically to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake well before each use.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children 6 months and older:** Same as adult dosing (3 to 4 times daily).
* **Infants under 6 months:** Not recommended without direct consultation from a pediatrician.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments are required as the medication is minimally absorbed. Use sparingly on broken or severely abraded skin to prevent irritation.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Not intended for use on deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatologic:** Rare contact dermatitis, skin dryness, or irritation at the application site.
* **Systemic:** None anticipated with topical use.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant. Avoid concurrent application of other topical medications to the same site unless directed, as it may affect absorption or efficacy.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, or fever).
* Discontinue use if the condition worsens or if symptoms persist beyond 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Application:** Shake the bottle thoroughly to ensure the active ingredients (which settle) are properly suspended.
* **Drying Effect:** The lotion has a drying effect; it is most effective for "weeping" or "oozing" lesions (e.g., poison ivy vesicles). It may exacerbate dry or xerotic skin conditions.
* **Patient Education:** Advise patients that the lotion will dry into a pink, chalky powder. It may stain fabrics.
* **Safety:** For external use only. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
