# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as an astringent and cooling agent to soothe minor skin irritations and pruritus.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching, pain, and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac).
* Symptomatic relief of insect bites and stings.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily, or as needed. Gently shake the bottle before use to ensure the suspension is uniform.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Neonates, Infants, Children:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily, or as needed.
* *Note:* Use caution in infants and young children to avoid ingestion; consult a pediatrician if the irritated area is extensive or involves broken skin.
## Dose Adjustments

## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to open wounds, severely blistered skin, or areas with significant discharge, as it may create a crust that traps bacteria.
