## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It provides a cooling, soothing effect upon evaporation and acts as a mild astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of minor skin irritation (e.g., poison ivy/oak/sumac, insect bites, prickly heat).
* Temporary relief of itching associated with dermatitis.
## Adult Dosing
* Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3–4 times daily as needed.
* Shake well before use to ensure uniform suspension.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children ≥ 6 months:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area up to 3–4 times daily as needed.
* **Infants < 6 months:** Use only as directed by a pediatrician.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required due to lack of significant percutaneous absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component (zinc oxide, ferric oxide, bentonite magma, calcium hydroxide, glycerin).
* Do not apply to open wounds, blistered skin, or weeping/broken skin unless advised by a healthcare professional.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or dryness upon repeated use.
* **Rare:** Localized allergic reaction (erythema, itching).
## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant systemic drug interactions identified due to minimal topical absorption.
* *Note:* Avoid concomitant use of other topical medications on the same skin area to prevent interference with drug absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, infection (increased redness, pus, warmth), or failure to resolve within 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls

* **Removal:** Calamine lotion can be easily removed by washing with warm water and soap.
