# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It provides a cooling, soothing effect upon evaporation and acts as a mild astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Pruritus associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy/oak/sumac, insect bites, chickenpox).
* Relief of weeping/oozing skin lesions.
## Adult Dosing
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure even suspension.
## Pediatric Dosing
Same as adult dosing: apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily. Use caution in infants and young children to prevent ingestion or application near the mouth or nostrils.
## Dose Adjustments
No systemic dose adjustments are required as the drug is for topical use only.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatological:** Mild stinging, drying, or irritation of the skin.
* **Systemic:** Generally negligible due to poor systemic absorption.
## Key Drug Interactions
There are no clinically significant drug-drug interactions for topical calamine lotion. However, avoid applying other topical medicated products to the same site simultaneously, as it may reduce their absorption or efficacy.
## Monitoring
Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, infection (e.g., purulent drainage, increasing erythema, or heat), or allergic contact dermatitis. Discontinue use if condition persists beyond 7 days or worsens.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Texture:** Shake the bottle vigorously; the suspension settles quickly.
* **Mechanism:** The cooling sensation results from the evaporation of the liquid base, which provides temporary relief from itching.
* **Application:** Calamine can leave a chalky residue. It is non-occlusive, making it suitable for weeping lesions, but it may cause excessive dryness on dry or scaling skin.
* **Accidental Ingestion:** While generally considered low toxicity, large ingestions may require assessment for potential gastric irritation or zinc toxicity; contact Poison Control.
