# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent consisting primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It provides a cooling, soothing effect on the skin through evaporation and mild astringent properties.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, sunburn).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform suspension.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing. Safe for use in children; avoid application near the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required due to negligible systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to broken, blistered, or infected skin/oozing lesions.
* Do not apply to areas with severe inflammation unless directed by a physician.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or dryness with frequent application.
* **Rare:** Allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling).
## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant systemic drug interactions are known due to minimal absorption.
* May temporarily decrease the absorption of other topical medications if applied simultaneously; allow previous applications to dry completely.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, infection, or lack of symptom improvement after 7 days of use.
* Discontinue use if a new rash or allergic reaction develops.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Application:** Allow the lotion to dry completely into a powdery film; do not cover with occlusive bandages or dressings.
* **Storage:** Store at room temperature; shaking is essential to prevent caking at the bottom of the bottle.
* **Clinical Efficacy:** While classic for poison ivy, it is primarily effective for symptom relief (soothing) rather than treating the underlying inflammatory process.
* **Safety:** For external use only. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention or contact a poison control center immediately.
