# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent. It is a mixture of zinc oxide (white, insoluble) and ferric oxide (which provides the characteristic pink color). It functions primarily as a soothing, cooling, and drying agent for minor skin irritations.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching and irritation from:
* Poison ivy, oak, and sumac.
* Insect bites or stings.
* Minor skin irritations (e.g., rashes).
## Adult Dosing
* Apply thinly to the affected area.
* Frequency: 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure suspension of the active ingredients.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing.
* **Note:** Use caution in infants to avoid ingestion or application near the mouth or eyes.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments are required; use is strictly topical.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to open wounds, severely blistered skin, or weeping/infected lesions unless directed by a clinician.
## Adverse Effects
* **Local:** Mild skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or dryness upon repeated use.
* **Systemic:** Generally negligible due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None observed; however, topical application may interfere with the absorption of other topical medications applied to the same area. Apply other medicated topicals before or after an appropriate interval.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, infection (e.g., increasing redness, warmth, pus), or allergic reaction.
* If symptoms persist beyond 7 days, reassess clinical status.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Effect:** Calamine is highly effective for weeping or oozing rashes (e.g., poison ivy) due to its astringent properties.
* **Storage:** Store at room temperature. The product naturally separates; vigorous shaking is required to reach a uniform concentration.
* **Application:** Allow the lotion to dry completely on the skin. It will form a thin, powdery film.
* **Safety:** For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.
