# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant typically consisting of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It provides a cooling, soothing effect upon evaporation and serves as an antipruritic and mild astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, rashes).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* **Maximum Dose:** No formal limit, though excessive application may lead to drying or cracking of the skin. Continue only as long as symptoms persist.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Same as adult dosing (apply thin layer 3 to 4 times daily).
* **Safety Note:** Use caution on broken skin or near mucous membranes. Ensure the child does not ingest the product.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic:** No adjustments necessary due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component (e.g., zinc oxide, ferric oxide, or base ingredients).
* Presence of signs of infection (purulence, spreading erythema).
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Skin dryness, irritation, or contact dermatitis upon prolonged use.
* **Rare:** Allergic reactions (rash, hives).
## Key Drug Interactions
* None of clinical significance due to topical application and minimal systemic absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary bacterial infection.
* Discontinue use if the condition worsens or if symptoms persist beyond 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake well:** The active ingredients settle; the bottle must be shaken vigorously before each application.
* **Application:** Allow the lotion to dry completely to form a protective coat; it will leave a visible pink, powdery residue.
* **Do not ingest:** Toxicity may occur if swallowed. Keep out of reach of children.
* **Avoid eyes/mucous membranes:** Accidental contact should be rinsed thoroughly with water.
* **Drying effect:** Repeated applications can be extremely drying to the skin; consider moisturizing after the itching resolves.
