# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent consisting primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It provides a cooling, soothing sensation upon evaporation and acts as a mild astringent for minor skin irritations.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of itching, pain, and discomfort associated with minor skin irritations.
* Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac exposure.
* Insect bites or stings.
* Minor sunburns.
## Adult Dosing
* Apply a thin layer to the affected area.
* Frequency: 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* Maximum dosage: Use only as frequently as necessary to manage symptoms; no formal systemic maximum exists due to minimal absorption.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants and Children:** Safe for use in all pediatric age groups.
* Apply a thin layer to the affected area.
* Frequency: 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments are required as there is negligible systemic absorption via intact skin.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to zinc oxide, ferric oxide, or any component of the formulation.
* Avoid application to broken, blistered, or weeping skin unless directed by a clinician (risk of crusting and trapping infection).
* Do not apply to mucous membranes or near the eyes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Dryness, mild irritation, or maceration of the skin with excessive use.
* **Rare:** Contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity reactions.
## Key Drug Interactions
* No significant clinical drug-drug interactions exist due to minimal systemic absorption.
* Avoid applying other topical medicated products simultaneously at the same site, as the physical barrier of calamine may interfere with the absorption of other topicals.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of infection (pus, increased redness, warmth, or fever) if applying to damaged skin.
* Discontinue use if the condition worsens, symptoms last longer than 7 days, or irritation/rash develops.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake well:** The product is a suspension and must be shaken thoroughly before each application to ensure uniform concentration of active ingredients.
* **Removal:** Calamine lotion can be easily removed with water or mineral oil.
* **Avoid ingestion:** Product is for external use only. If ingested, seek medical attention or contact Poison Control.
* **Barrier efficacy:** It is physically inactive; it does not "cure" underlying conditions like contact dermatitis but provides temporary symptom relief.
* **Staining:** Be aware that the iron content may stain clothing or linens.
