# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant consisting primarily of zinc oxide (active) and ferric oxide (which provides the characteristic pink color). It acts as an astringent and antipruritic agent to soothe inflamed skin.
## Primary Indications
* Pruritus associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, and chickenpox).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Shake well before use. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children ≥6 months:** Apply thin layer to affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* **Neonates/Infants <6 months:** Consult a pediatrician. Generally avoided due to the potential for ingestion and lack of established safety data.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments required as absorption is negligible.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component (zinc oxide, ferric oxide, or excipients like bentonite magma).
* Do not apply to deep puncture wounds, severe burns, or broken/blistered skin unless directed by a provider (risk of systemic absorption/infection).
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Dryness or irritation at the application site.
* **Rare:** Contact dermatitis or allergic reaction to excipients.
* **Safety Warning:** Highly flammable if in aerosol form; do not use near open flame or while smoking.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant for topical application. Avoid applying concurrently with other topical medicaments to the same site to prevent interference with absorption/activity.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for resolution of pruritus.
* Discontinue and consult a provider if the condition worsens or persists beyond 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Effect:** Calamine is highly astringent; prolonged use may lead to excessive skin drying.
* **Administration:** Allow the lotion to dry completely to form a protective barrier; it will leave a white, powdery residue.
* **Ingestion Risk:** Keep out of reach of children. Oral ingestion may lead to zinc toxicity, although accidental small ingestions are typically limited to mild gastrointestinal upset.
* **Infection:** Do not apply to weeping or infected lesions without medical supervision, as the lotion may "trap" bacteria under the dried layer.
