# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant and mild antipruritic containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide (which provides the characteristic pink color). It functions primarily as a soothing agent and a mild astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations.
* Dermatitis due to plant contact (poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac).
* Insect bites and stings.
* Minor skin rashes.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Shake well before use. Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Allow the lotion to dry on the skin.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Topical (Infants, children, adolescents):** Same as adult dosing. Shake well and apply sparingly to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily. Use caution to avoid systemic absorption in neonates.
## Dose Adjustments
* No formal dose adjustments required for renal or hepatic impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to blistered, raw, or oozing areas unless directed by a physician (may cause crusting/trapping of bacteria).
* Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or dryness.
* **Serious:** Rarely, allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of the face/throat/tongue).
## Key Drug Interactions
* Minimal systemic absorption suggests a low risk for significant drug-drug interactions.
* Avoid applying other topical agents (e.g., corticosteroids or emollients) to the same area unless directed, as this may alter the effectiveness or absorption of either product.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, secondary skin infection (e.g., increasing redness, warmth, pus, fever), or lack of response after 7 days of use.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Application:** Shake vigorously before each use, as calamine settles over time.
* **Texture:** The astringent effect can be drying; avoid application to extensively dry or cracked skin.
* **Removal:** Easily removed with soap and water.
* **Safety:** For external use only. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice or contact a poison control center immediately.
* **Uncertainty:** Dosing frequency may be adjusted based on the severity of symptoms; there is no strict "maximum" dose, but excessive application can cause skin irritation or excessive buildup.
