# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic composed primarily of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as a soothing agent that provides a cooling sensation upon evaporation and serves as a mild astringent for minor skin irritations.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus (itching) due to poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, or minor skin irritations.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3–4 times daily, or as needed.
* **Maximum Dose:** No specific systemic maximum; use sparingly to avoid excessive drying or caking on the skin.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Pediatric (6 months and older):** Apply to affected areas 3–4 times daily.
* **Infants (<6 months):** Consult a pediatrician prior to use.
* **Note:** Use cautiously to prevent accidental ingestion or inhalation of vapors.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic:** No adjustments necessary; negligible systemic absorption.
* **Geriatric:** No specific adjustments, though skin may be thinner/more prone to dryness.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to zinc oxide, ferric oxide, or any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to blistered, raw, or oozing skin surfaces unless directed by a healthcare provider.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatologic:** Skin dryness, irritation, or contact dermatitis with prolonged use.
* **Systemic:** Generally none, provided the product is not ingested.
## Key Drug Interactions
* Minimal interactions due to lack of systemic absorption.
* Avoid applying other topical medicated products (e.g., corticosteroids) simultaneously, as the lotion may form a barrier that potentially alters drug absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor treated area for signs of worsening irritation, infection (erythema, warmth, pus), or failure to improve after 7 days.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake well:** Calamine lotion is a suspension that settles; thorough agitation is required before each application to ensure uniform concentration.
* **Drying effect:** The lotion can be excessively drying; discontinue use if skin becomes overly cracked or irritated.
* **Ingestion risk:** Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
* **Cosmetic:** Leaves a pink, chalky residue that may stain clothing.
