# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic agent consisting of a mixture of zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It provides a cooling, soothing effect upon evaporation and acts as a mild astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Pruritus (itching) associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, chickenpox).
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Shake bottle well before each use.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children ≥ 6 months:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
* **Children < 6 months:** Consult a pediatrician before use.
## Dose Adjustments
* No specific systemic dose adjustments required due to lack of significant percutaneous absorption.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to blistered, oozing, or severely broken/raw skin without medical advice.
* Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Mild stinging upon application, skin dryness, local irritation.
* **Rare:** Contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity reaction (rash, swelling, persistent itching).
## Key Drug Interactions
* None significant due to minimal systemic absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary skin infection (increasing redness, pus, warmth).
* Assess for resolution of pruritus; if symptoms persist beyond 7 days or worsen, discontinue and consult a healthcare provider.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Application:** Always shake the bottle vigorously until the suspension is uniform. The pink color is characteristic of the ferric oxide content.
* **Removal:** It can be washed off with warm water and soap; do not scrub the skin aggressively.
* **Safety:** For external use only. Keep out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion.
* **Uncertainty:** Dosing frequency may be increased based on institutional protocols for specific dermatological conditions, but generally should not exceed 4 applications daily to prevent excessive skin drying.
