# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical skin protectant containing zinc oxide and ferric oxide. It acts as a mild antipruritic and astringent. It works by evaporating upon application, providing a cooling sensation, and forming a protective barrier over the skin.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of minor skin irritations and itching.
* Conditions include poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, insect bites, and minor rashes.
## Adult Dosing
Apply to the affected area as needed, typically 3 to 4 times daily. Shake well before use. There is no specific maximum daily limit, but excessive use may cause skin desiccation.
## Pediatric Dosing
Same as adults. Generally safe for pediatric use. Follow instructions for adults. For infants, consult a pediatrician before application to large areas of the body.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dosage adjustments are required for renal or hepatic impairment as systemic absorption is negligible.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to deep, puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
* Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
## Adverse Effects
* Skin irritation or dryness with prolonged/frequent use.
* Rare: Contact dermatitis due to excipients.
* Inhalation risk: Avoid inhaling the dust if using calamine powder.
## Key Drug Interactions
No clinically significant systemic drug interactions are known due to the topical nature and lack of systemic absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of secondary infection (erythema, warmth, pus).
* Assess for worsening of the rash after 7 days of continuous use.
## Clinical Pearls
* **Drying Effect:** Calamine is best for "weeping" lesions (e.g., vesicles from poison ivy) as it helps dry the skin. It may be overly drying for dry or scaly eczema.
* **Application:** Apply as a thin layer and allow to dry.
* **Removal:** Easily removed with water.
* **Pregnancy/Lactation:** Generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and breastfeeding; avoid application to the nipple area if breastfeeding to prevent infant ingestion.
