# Calamine Lotion
## Overview
Calamine lotion is a topical protectant and antipruritic combination of zinc oxide (active ingredient) and ferric oxide (which provides the characteristic pink color). It functions by evaporating upon application to produce a cooling sensation and acting as a mild astringent.
## Primary Indications
* Relief of pruritus associated with minor skin irritations (e.g., poison ivy/oak/sumac).
* Temporary relief of rashes due to insect bites, stings, or chickenpox.
## Adult Dosing
* **Topical:** Shake well before use. Apply a thin layer to the affected area using a clean cloth, cotton ball, or applicator.
* **Frequency:** May be applied 3 to 4 times daily as needed.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Infants/Children:** Apply a thin layer to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily.
* **Note:** Keep out of reach of children to prevent ingestion. Avoid application near the eyes.
## Dose Adjustments
* No systemic dose adjustments are required as the product is for external, topical use only.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
* Do not apply to open wounds, blistered skin, or weeping lesions unless directed by a healthcare provider.
## Adverse Effects
* **Dermatologic:** Drying, irritation, or contact dermatitis with prolonged or excessive use.
* **General:** Potential for staining of clothing or bedding.
## Key Drug Interactions
* None clinically significant for topical administration. Note that applying other topical medications over calamine may decrease their absorption.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of worsening irritation, lack of improvement after 7 days of use, or signs of secondary skin infection (e.g., pus, spreading redness, fever).
## Clinical Pearls
* **Shake well:** Calamine lotion is a suspension that settles; thorough agitation is required to ensure a uniform concentration of active ingredients.
* **Avoid mucous membranes:** Ensure the product is not applied near the eyes, nose, or mouth.
* **Avoid inhalation:** Do not apply to damaged skin where systemic absorption could theoretically increase, though this is rare.
* **Drying effect:** Prolonged use can cause excessive drying of the skin. If the skin becomes severely dry/cracked, discontinue use.
