# Azithromycin
## Overview
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic.
## Primary Indications
* **Respiratory Tract Infections:** Community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of COPD, pharyngitis/tonsillitis (Streptococcus pyogenes), acute otitis media.
* **Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:** Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.
* **Sexually Transmitted Infections:** Chlamydia trachomatis (cervicitis/urethritis), chancroid.
* **Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) prophylaxis and treatment.**
* **Pertussis (whooping cough).**
## Adult Dosing
* **Community-acquired pneumonia:** 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg on days 2-5. (Total dose: 1.5 g).
* **Acute bacterial exacerbations of COPD:** 500 mg once daily for 3 days. (Total dose: 1.5 g).
* **Pharyngitis/tonsillitis:** 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg on days 2-5. (Total dose: 1.5 g). Single dose of 500 mg is also used.
